“I made up my mind that I will live my life only for the sake of music, and I decided that I will give up everything for music.” Born in South Korea, Yunchan Lim started taking piano lessons when he was only seven, and six years later, he was accepted into the Korea National University of the Arts. There, he met his teacher Minsoo Sohn, an accomplished pianist particularly noted for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Yunchan has performed with many orchestras at a variety of concert halls across the globe, like the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few, while also holding recitals at venues like Victoria Concert Hall, Taipei's National Concert Hall, and the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Currently, Yunchan Lim is studying at his teacher's alma mater, the New England Conservatory.
Of the competitions he has participated in, the most well known is the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where his performance of Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 earned him not only the Gold Medal, but the Audience Award and Best Performance of a New Work as well. At the time, Yunchan Lim was 18 years old, and the youngest to ever earn the award. More recently, in 2024, he has been nominated for the category of Best Classical at The Global Awards 2024 alongside cellist Abel Selaocoe, organist Anna Lapwood, vocalist Malakai Bayoh, and opera singer Lise Davidsen.
