Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, op. 55, by Ludwig van Beethoven, also known as Eroica (“Heroic”), is a work considered by many to be the dawn of musical romanticism, since it marks significant departure from traditional classical symphonic norms.
It was inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution and initially dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. Beethoven admired the ideals of the French Revolution embodied by Napoleon. When Napoleon became emperor in May 1804, the name Bonaparte was torn off from the title page by Beethoven.
The subtitle of the published score simply said “composed to celebrate the remembrance of a great man.” Many have speculated about who this “great man” may have been.
