Let My Prayer Arise Before Thee, O Lord

Chesnokov was a remarkably prolific author of sacred music in Russia who served as choirmaster at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. The cathedral's destruction in 1933 devastated Chesnokov so much that he quit composing over it. His psalm "Let my prayer rise before Thee like incense, the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice" is part of the special celebratory vespers only used during the time of Lent in the Byzantine Rite. The psalm is known as one of Chesnokov's most beautiful works and communicates a feeling of mysticism and awe.
