One Earth Mission

Updated: Mar 16

Looking back to this year, the world has finally almost overcome the crisis of the pandemic, but new and old challenges such as regional wars and climate change continue to torture many of our fellow human being. One Earth Mission aims to evoke people’s sense of unity as residents of earth and raise awareness of our communal problems through live broadcast Beethoven’s Egmont Overture to International Space Station.

The project is organized by JAXA, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Saito Kinen Orchestra, the orchestra started by acclaimed conductor Seiji Ozawa in memory of Japanese music educator Saito Kinen.

At the age of 87 with physical disability, in this video Maestro Ozawa shows nothing but tenacity and resolution. Although he can no longer move his body or speak freely, we hear his message and appeal clearly through the music: “Music can transcend words, borders, ethnicities, and the atmosphere to directly connect the hearts of people. All of us as living beings on Earth are the same, and we are one.”

As part of the 30 th anniversary of JAXA, the project is also technologically ambitious considering that International Space Station travels 28000km per hour in space. The live broadcast requires highly coordinated collaboration between scientists and various international technical crews. It is undoubtedly symbolic when the music reaches astronaut Koichi Wakata in space, and all of us to sense on a global scale that we all live on the same planet.
