Lucy's Story

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

The first video tells the story of Lucy, a 10-year-old girl with blindness and autism, and the interaction with her teacher, Daniel. You can see one of Lucy's weekly piano lessons at her special school for primary-aged children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The aim of the video is to show how severe learning difficulties, blindness, and autism need not be barriers to exceptional musical achievement. It also highlights some of the innovative strategies that teachers can use to engage successfully with pupils who have disabilities. The video emphasizes the importance of appropriate music provision for all children with disabilities, irrespective of their levels of musical attainment.

The above video is an update to one of the most uplifting stories. For this Channel 4’s programme, The Piano, it sought to find Britain’s most talented undiscovered pianists. Presented by Claudia Winkleman, the four finalists performed at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The judges, singer-songwriter Mika and classical pianist Lang Lang announced Lucy was awarded first place in the final.
