Global Warming

Michael Abels is a contemporary composer known for film scores and concert pieces. His scores for Jordan Peele's films have won numerous awards. His concert works, like the opera "OMAR," have received critical acclaim. OMAR was named one of the 10 best classical performances of 2022 by The New York Times.

Abels started composing as a teenager and his compositions have been performed by major orchestras. His orchestral work "Global Warming" explores international relations with various cultural elements, but it is open to interpretation.

It begins by evoking a futuristic vast desert scene, with the buzzing sound of desert locusts in the background. However, the composition quickly transits into a more uplifting tone, blending elements of Irish, African, and Persian music, as well as rhythmic drones, to highlight their shared qualities in a joyous manner. Rather than concluding on a cheery note, the piece returns to its initial barren desert scene, leaving it to the listener to determine their preferred interpretation of global warming.

While the composition was not originally intended as a political statement, its underlying message has resonated as climate change has become an increasingly urgent and universally recognized concern.
